Change our outfit

We must change our outfit
The journey requires we take most things off
It was painful, more than we thought
To say goodbye to only clothes

A sad pile of garments behind us
We shiver, surveying the clothes we might now put on
We are cold, but try not to hurry
These are important choices

We can decide to wear compassion
As a coat we only put on when its very cold
Or next to our skin
Our well worn underwear

We may choose extra accessories
Of religious activity
Only to find they tighten around our necks
Muffle our ears and clash with love

We might put on every new thing we can
As if new is always best
Or take garments almost in threads
Held out by praying hands

Or we could carefully search
For everything only made with threads of love
Woven with hope and sewed in faith
And give every item away to those colder than us

  1. What beautiful imagery. So true that our religious activity can end up garrotting us! But genuine love is a beautiful garment to put on. Thank you, Karlie.
