What is mission? What does it really look like, sound like, feel like today? Is it even a helpful word? And what does it mean to be pioneering in mission? Let’s make our way through these issues together.
An annual opportunity to catch up on the latest thinking and research on pioneering and fresh expressions of church.
In Oxford on 7 November, join the conversation as keynote speakers Ann Morisy, and Jonny Baker, consider ‘Mission is…?’ There will be lots of workshops to choose from throughout the day including ‘painting pictures, sharing stories’, ‘Mission is reciprocal’ and ‘the importance of place’. There will also be new research presented on the ecclesiology of fresh expressions, the value of missional communities and how pioneering can be evaluated for effectiveness.
Ann Morisy is a community theologian, author and speaker. Her books include Beyond the Good Samaritan, Journeying Out and Bothered and Bewildered. She has researched and presented on subjects such as the spirituality of public transport, the spirituality of ageing and Pentecost for progressives. She also served as director of the Commission on Urban Life and Faith. Ann has a well-deserved reputation for being an engaging communicator who combines scholarship and practical application.
Jonny is director of mission education at Church Mission Society and leader of the CMS Pioneer Mission Leadership Training Course. He particularly enjoys connecting with pioneers who have “the gift of not fitting in” as they are called by God to new forms of mission and ministry, often beyond the edges of the church.
For Chelmsford Diocese on 11 November – We are delighted to be working in partnership with our first regional pioneer hub, the St Cedd Centre based in Collier Row, and will be welcoming keynote speaker, Jonny Baker, who is speaking about ‘Mission is…done from the inside?’ Additional keynote will be given by Mark Berry, pioneer of Safe Space in Telford and co-author of A New Monastic Handbook and a new Grove Book on how mission flows out of community.
We will enjoy workshops with Vanessa Conant, speaking on Mission as community development. Vanessa Conant is the Team Rector in Walthamstow. Janet Nicholls, Rural adviser and Agricultural chaplain to the Diocese of Chelmsford, is presenting on rural mission. Ordained Pioneer Minister in Billericay, Dan Pierce, has the intriguingly entitled session ‘Mission is…messed up: Why it doesn’t work and why it’s not supposed to!? Janie and David Beales from DNA Networks in Colchester will share their experience of creating and developing missional clusters and Rachel Summers, who is a student at St Cedds, will talk about mission and social media.
