Missional Entrepreneurship

10 April 2016:5.00pm - 15 April 2016:2.00pm

The other beach nearby!

A unique training opportunity

Missional entrepreneurship looks at how pioneering mission can become financially self-sustaining. It is taught over five consecutive days in luxury accommodation overlooking the beautiful Devon countryside, just a short walk from a secluded sandy beach.

What you can expect

It takes your idea, that could be both transformational and marketable as an income generating product or service, and helps you develop it into a social enterprise. You will be given practical advice on writing a mission statement, devising a strategy for implementing your innovation, how you can effectively and appropriately evaluate success and the options available for securing funding to turn your dream into reality.

There will also be inspiring stories of Christians who have already turned their missional activities into successful enterprises and lots of opportunities to engage with God and share your hopes and struggles with other pioneers.

Who runs the course?

In groups exploring ideas furtherThe week culminates in pitching to a panel of entrepreneurs and funders who might be persuaded there and then to inject start up cash into your initiative!

The week is facilitated by Shannon Hopkins who co-owns ‘Sweet Notions’ and the ‘Transformational Index’, a tool for organisations to evaluate success against criteria other than the bottom line!

It is hosted by Steve Baker, a property developer, who with his wife and two friends has turned Pickwell Manor into a money-making business that gives back to the local community and provides a resource for training and spiritual refreshment.

What previous attendees said about the week

“Life changing, brilliant, dynamic, great networking, a place where dreams come to life.”

“It was a great week helping me think about what we do in both the general and the specific. A really practical module, well presented, with great people. You really pushed us to wrestle with what we are doing and why – and how to make it happen. The content and process was superb – and being away created space to think about it so that when I returned home I could immediately put stuff into action. I can’t say it loudly enough how valuable it was.”

Tangible outcomes

RS57983_ME2012-1-scr Ideas that were moulded and shaped on the missional entrepreneurship week, are now being brought to life. Liane Kensett heard about the course at Greenbelt last year and has since set up a project called ‘Orts’. Orts is an old fashioned word meaning left over scraps. Her idea was born out of a six week placement with Lighthouse in Hull, working alongside and supporting women in the sex industry, particularly those working the streets, or trying to move out of prostitution. Then she spent time at the Edinburgh Fringe and heard about a “celebration of orts” being co-ordinated by a Venture FX minister in the city.

Liane takes up the story, “The blending of the two things has stuck with me and grown and developed. The week on the course helped move these thoughts into a potential business plan. Upcycling left over scraps into beautiful items we can sell, with the emphasis being the process and helping all involved to discover the beautiful value that they RS37552_United_Kingdom_Events_98046-scrhave too.

“Thanks to the generosity of Pickwell Manor we have secured the use of an old pharmacy in the parish hall right in the area we want to be in. Gradually it is filling up with donated craft resources and fabric scraps. We hope to get the table this week so we can actually begin making.

“Steve and Diane from the Imagine Foundation came to see the base and as a result of their help we are about to open a bank account and draw up a kind of constitution. It feels like a really big and defining step! Hopefully we will begin to build up a stock of lovely homemade crafts ready to sell at Christmas. Keep your eyes peeled for the Orts label!”
